Self Promotion

The Art of Self Promotion

Whether you are looking for a job, trying to meet that special someone or just out making friends, a little self promotion can’t hurt. You never know when the person you are talking to at the coffee shop might get you a job or introduce you to someone who can give you a good deal on a car. Self promotion is not reserved for those with a big ego. There is no reason you can’t promote yourself for your own benefit and the benefit of your family and friends.

Self promotion is a good method of self management. It ensures you have the appropriate network and contacts to address any issues or future problems. It can’t hurt!

Consider the message you want to deliver to those you meet. Think about the image and the impression you make when you meet someone who doesn’t know you. Do you meet new people with a firm handshake, directly meeting their eyes and smiling in welcome? That is the way to make an impression. If you are a bit shy, it might take some practice to get comfortable with this approach, but you will be happy with the results.

If you are looking for a job or promoting your business, sit down with a paper and pencil and develop a three minute monologue. Think about meeting someone in an elevator or waiting in line outside a club. What capsule of information can you deliver without seeming too pushy or aggressive? What do you want them to know about you so they will remember you if they see an opportunity to employ you or to use your product? Keep it short and sweet and informative without making it too obnoxious and egotistical. Facts and memorable accomplishments will stick in the minds of the people you meet.

Always carry business cards with you. If you don’t have a business or a job that might warrant a business card, go online and get 200 business cards for free. Keep the business card simple. Name, email and phone number are plenty of information and a title or type of business is fine as well. How about something informative and whimsical like: Robert Smith, 555-1212, robertsmith @ acme .com, artist, painter, great thinker! Whether you are looking for a date or making a business or personal contact, having that business card handy is always better than fishing for a scrap of paper and pen while the person is walking away!

You never know when self promotion will come in handy. It just might get you a new job, even if you aren’t actively looking, or a date with an interesting new acquaintance, or a new friend or client. Don’t sell yourself short and don’t hesitate to shake a hand. It can’t hurt!
